Recalling our day in the sun: comparing long-term recall of childhood sun exposure with prospectively collected parent-reported data

Group data from retrospective recall of sun-related behaviours may be of limited value in studying the relationship between sun exposure and health outcomes;

Research

Effects of serotonin depletion and dopamine depletion on bimodal divided attention

The results indicate a possible dissociation between the effects of a diminished brain 5-HT and DA synthesis on the performance in a bimodal divided attention task

Pediatric Burn Survivors Have Long-Term Immune Dysfunction With Diminished Vaccine Response

Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that survivors of acute burn trauma are at long-term increased risk of developing a range of morbidities. The mechanisms underlying this increased risk remain unknown. This study aimed to determine whether burn injury leads to sustained immune dysfunction that may underpin long-term morbidity. Plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells were collected from 36 pediatric burn survivors >3 years after a non-severe burn injury (<10% total body surface area) and from age/sex-matched non-injured controls.

Analytical bias in the measurement of plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations in infants

To our knowledge, this is the first study to show that the reported 25(OH)D concentration may be influenced by both age and assay type

Research

Acute Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease is a concise, yet comprehensive, clinical resource highlighting must-know information on rheumatic heart disease and acute rheumatic fever from a global perspective

Research

Topical antiseptics for chronic suppurative otitis media

The effectiveness and safety profile of antiseptics in the treatment of chronic suppurative otitis media is uncertain

Research

Simultaneous Targeting of DNA Replication and Homologous Recombination in Glioblastoma with a Polyether Ionophore

Our findings highlight the potential of salinomycin to induce DNA lesions and inhibit homologous recombination to greatly enhance the effect of radiotherapy

Research

A method for the generation of large numbers of dendritic cells from CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells from cord blood

Neonatal dendritic cells generated form CD34+ cord blood progenitors have a higher inflammatory potential when exposed to viral than bacterial related stimuli

Research

Early life exposure to coal mine fire smoke emissions and altered lung function in young children

Infant exposure to coal mine fire emissions could be associated with long-term impairment of lung reactance

Research

Optimized peripheral blood progenitor cell mobilization for autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation in children with high-risk and refractory malignancies

Our approach to hematopoietic progenitor cells mobilization resulted in highly effective HPC harvest in children and adolescents with high-risk cancers
